What is it
The Whole30 is a 30 day reset button for people who want to start eating healthier. The founders found that by eliminating certain foods from their diets, their bodies healed injuries that had plagued them for a long time, let them lose weight without an effort and stopped their sugar cravings. The founders based it on the paleo diet which consists of eating like hunter-gatherers. This includes meat, fish, vegetables, nuts and fats derived from low-processing methods. That means olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil and clarified butter. The diet excludes all grains (corn, wheat, rye etc.), dairy (cheese, milk, regular butter, yoghurt etc.), sugar (any kind, also honey and maple syrup) and alcohol.
According to the paleo diet, eating grains, legumes, dairy and sugar causes inflammation and a disruption in the normal processes of the body. This in turn leads to all kinds of maladies that are increasingly common in the developed world. Illnesses like diabetes, digestive tract diseases, heart problems etc.
Why is it any better than other diets?
According to a study done in 2017 comparing the short-term and long-term weight loss outcomes from different studies on popular diets, it was found that in after 6 months on the paleo diet participants had lost on average 7.85 kg or 17.3 lbs and after 24 months the participants had lost an average of 9.2 kg or 20.3 lbs.
